Bigger Guns Before Knives: Imaged Guided Nonoperative Options for MSK Problems
Friday October 9, 2026 3:00pm - 4:00pm MDT
Your patient has diligently followed their treatment program, but is not making the progress you and they desire. Maybe they have been offered surgery and are hesitant, or perhaps surgery isn’t an option for their situation. They ask you about what else could be done. What will you tell them?

Join us for this session, as we discuss established and emerging treatment options for difficult musculoskeletal problems, with real patient cases, fun clinical images, and supporting evidence. Some of the options we’ll review include cortisone injections, aspiration, sclerotherapy, barbotage, hydrodissection, hydrodialation, platelet rich plasma, stem cells, peptides, and more.

Objectives:

  1. Describe indications, contraindications, risks and benefits for common image guided MSK procedures
  2. Identify patient scenarios where these procedures could be considered
  3. Counsel patients on common procedural experience and realistic results

Pain Doesn't Wait: Urgent Care Physical Therapy as Primary Care PT
Saturday October 10, 2026 8:00am - 9:00am MDT
Urgent care is a well-established entry point into primary care for time-sensitive conditions, yet physical therapy remains underutilized in this role for patients with acute musculoskeletal pain -- one of the most common drivers for patients to seek care. This session introduces an emerging solution: Urgent Care Physical Therapy as a primary care access model for pain. Drawing from military research, private practice pioneers, and rural scale strategies, presenters demonstrate how stepping into a familiar access point for patients -- but a new space for physical therapy -- positions PTs to lead as primary care providers for pain, capture new patient populations, improve outcomes, and reduce unnecessary downstream care. Objectives
  • Describe urgent care physical therapy as a primary care PT access model for acute musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction
  • Compare published outcomes from a direct-access military acute spine clinic with private practice urgent care PT implementation strategies
  • Identify operational, clinical, and systems-level components required to launch or pilot an urgent care PT model
  • Develop an initial implementation plan for an urgent care PT pathway in their own practice setting

Primary Care Physical Therapy: Building Direct Access Pathways for Pain and Movement Health
Saturday October 10, 2026 12:40pm - 1:40pm MDT
Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek care, yet access to timely, appropriate treatment remains inconsistent. As healthcare systems evolve toward value-based and primary caredriven models, physical therapists are uniquely positioned to serve as first-contact providers for pain and movement-related conditions. However, many practices continue to operate within traditional referral-based and episodic care models that limit access and delay intervention.

This session explores the role of physical therapy as a primary care entry point and outlines practical strategies to improve access, reduce unnecessary healthcare utilization, and enhance patient outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on direct access models, early intervention, and integrating physical therapy into broader primary care pathways.

Participants will gain insight into emerging care models, communication strategies for positioning PT as a primary care provider, and operational considerations for implementing direct access services. Real-world examples and case-based discussion will support application across a variety of practice settings, including outpatient clinics, rural health systems, and employer-based care environments.

Learning Objectives:1. Describe the role of physical therapy as a primary care provider for musculoskeletal pain and movement health.
2. Explain how early access to physical therapy impacts patient outcomes and healthcare utilization.
3. Identify barriers to implementing direct access primary care PT models and strategies to address them.
4. Develop practical approaches to improve patient access and integrate PT into primary care pathways.

Sports Nutrition Strategies for Injury Prevention
Saturday October 10, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm MDT
We'll discuss the prevalence of low energy availability among high school and collegiate athletes and how that could be contributing to the rise of soft tissue injuries. We'll differentiate between nutrition for health and nutrition for sport and then review sports nutrition recommendations to fuel exercise and competition along with tips to help encourage athletes to fuel better overall.
The audience will gain a better understanding of sports nutrition recommendations and can better help their patients, themselves, and their children to adequately fuel for sport and decrease risk of injury.
We'll briefly touch on nutrition recommendations appropriate for ACL repair recovery.

Objectives:
  1. Understand the difference between nutrition for health and nutrition for sport.
  2. Understand how low energy availability puts athletes at a higher risk for injury.
  3. Identify which foods properly fuel exercise.
  4. Learn the basic nutrient timing strategies for before, during, and after exercise.
  5. Identify which supplements are appropriate for recovery for ACL repair.

Pelvic Health for the Primary Care PT
Sunday October 11, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am MDT
This course provides physical therapists with foundational knowledge in pelvic health, empowering them to confidently integrate pelvic considerations into their practice. Designed for PTs in primary care settings, the course covers key topics such as pregnancy and postpartum care, prehab and rehab for cesarean delivery, and acute postpartum treatment. Participants will also explore the role of pelvic health in managing conditions like low back pain, hip dysfunction, constipation, and gastrointestinal issues. Through hands-on labs, case studies, and practical tools, attendees will leave with essential skills to screen for pelvic floor dysfunction, recognize when to refer to a pelvic health specialist, and deliver targeted interventions within their scope of practice.

Learning Objectives:
  • Integrate Pelvic Health Concepts into Practice:
    • Understand the relevance of pelvic health to common conditions such as low back pain, hip dysfunction, and bowel/bladder complaints and incorporate pelvic considerations into treatment plans for patients across settings.
    • Recognize red flags requiring referrals to pelvic health specialists, gynecologists, or urologists.
  • Pregnancy and Postpartum Care:
    • Provide education and prehabilitation strategies for patients preparing for vaginal or cesarean delivery, including strengthening and pelvic floor relaxation techniques.
    • Implement postpartum interventions for C-section and vaginal delivery recovery, addressing scar management, diastasis recti, pelvic pain, and incontinence.
  • Acute and Inpatient Care Post-Birth:
    • Identify and treat common postpartum conditions such as urinary retention, constipation, and pelvic pain in the acute care setting.
    • Learn safe mobilization techniques and basic exercises to initiate post-birth recovery.
  • Screen and Manage Pelvic Health in Orthopedic and Neuro Patients:
    • Perform screenings for pelvic floor dysfunction and related issues in patients presenting with musculoskeletal complaints, especially chronic low back or hip pain.

But What About New Grads? Mentoring Entry-Level Providers for Primary Care
Sunday October 11, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am MDT
We all want our new colleagues to be able to effectively evaluate and treat our patients in rural (and thus primary) care environments on day one, which requires effective mentorship both in clinical experiences and as they begin their first jobs. This session will be moderated by Dr. Audrey Elias, featuring the insights of a seasoned director of clinical education and of curriculum (Dr. Jennifer Bell), a currently practicing clinician with significant experience mentoring both students and new graduates (Dr. Christy Heidema), and a member of the class of 2026 with very recent experience in a variety of settings as a student and as a new graduate (Dr. Allison Smith). Attendees will gain an appreciation of what DPT students are learning about primary care, and how best to foster and expand these skills as a clinical instructor and as a mentor to new colleagues.* Understand current CAPTE requirements for primary care content in DPT programs
